Gear Reviews
Everything here has been on the road with us. The Crew Pick badge means we use it on every trip. Tested Once means it's earned a second look. Returned means exactly what it says -- and we explain why.
We earn a small commission on Amazon links at no cost to you. We never review gear we haven't tested, and we never let a commission change the verdict.
Safety & Tracking
Fi Series 3 GPS Dog Collar
Dublin's verdict
“Tracked us from the Smokies to Big Bend without a single drop. Battery runs a full week on a long trip. The geofence alert is the only feature that matters -- and the only one Chester cannot cheat.”
Harnesses & Leads
Ruffwear Front Range Harness
Chester's verdict
“I have opinions about gear. This one I have no complaints about. Two points of leash attachment, doesn't shift when I decide to accelerate at full speed toward a squirrel. Dublin verified the fit is correct. I did not ask him to. He did it anyway.”
RV Monitoring
Govee WiFi Temperature Humidity Sensor
Eleanor's verdict
“Left the rig for 90 minutes in Moab at 97 degrees. Got an alert when the temp hit 81 inside and was back before it climbed. That's the whole use case. It costs $25. If you travel in summer, you need one.”
Food & Water
Ruffwear Trail Runner Bowl
Chester's verdict
“Compact, doesn't leak in the pack, and holds enough water that even I can rehydrate mid-hike. The silicone collapses flat. Dublin uses the same one and has never acknowledged that I recommended it first.”
Travel Safety
Kurgo Tru-Fit Smart Harness (car crash-tested)
Eleanor's verdict
“Crash-tested at an independent lab. Attaches to the seat belt. Not exciting gear to talk about -- until you need it to do the thing. We won't travel without it. Get the right size and don't skip the chest strap.”
Camp Setup
Zero-G Lightweight Garden Hose
Wayne's verdict
“Weighs almost nothing, kink-resistant, and handles the pressure at every campground hook-up I've tested it on. We use it for the camp rinse-down after a muddy trail day. Two seasons, no issues. It's a hose -- it just works.”
Cleanup
Neakasa M1 Pet Grooming Vacuum
Eleanor's verdict
“Solid suction, dogs tolerated the noise faster than expected. The brush attachments are genuinely useful for post-trail fur management. We've only done one trip with it, so it hasn't earned a permanent spot yet -- but it's on the shortlist.”
Transport
Alcott Explorer Backpack Carrier
Dublin's verdict
“Advertised for dogs up to 20 lbs. Fits 20 lbs. Chester is 20 lbs. Chester does not fit in the carrier without structural protest. The shoulder straps also rode poorly at the hip transfer point on uneven terrain. Returned after one weekend. Not the gear's fault -- size expectations were the issue. Check the actual dimensions before ordering.”
